zz top ... a-how-how-how are they still playing?
saw zz top again last nite at jack fest... w/ stray cats, pretenders and gin blossoms. i've seen zz 5 times now, every time worse than the previous. not to say they are terrible concerts, but can't put the magic back in the bottle after seeing them at their peak, the 'eliminator tour' back in '86-87. tom influenced my fandom of zz. he even put a 'zz' on the side of his junked out, trashy monaco. see 'artists conception photoshop' of how tom remembers that car.
zz top in '86: huge stage, civic center st. paul, huge light show, sold out show. pyrotechnics, walls of speakers, unbelievable concert. w/ dawn, bro tom and joan. nosebleed seats. 2 encores. spinning guitars, fuzzy guitars, duck walks, stage dancers/babes in background, etc. huge production, huge stage
zz top in '89: dorm guys two dates BOTH backed out on them or broke up w/ them. they didn't know it until the day of the concert. i offered them like $10 for a ticket. ames, ia, hilton coliseum. a very big show, but not quite as good as the orig. no live animals, no zz car on stage. had the big sphinx instead. mid-floor seats
zz top in '95: wife and i were planning on going to 1st avenue bar (for their dance night, 'danceteria'... princes old bar in downtown mpls... really great dancefloor, sound, scene (or at least it was 10 years ago). we walked by the target center, and saw 'tonite only! zz top!' on marquee. walked to box office, they just released really good seats on the side of stage. we got 'em. very close to stage. few rows up. they're looking older. less stage props. no spinning guitars. no onstage babes. no sphinx. no car. no cattle.
zz top in '00: at state fair. outside. at dusk/not quite dark. terrible sound. no stage props. too far away. blah like concert. the thrill is gone...
zz top in '07: at xcel, 3 other bands. still headlining. much older, no stage but background light board. still the 'wall of sound' but visually blah. still gotta love their play-set, tho... la grange, cheap sunglasses, tush, jesus just left chicago, legs, i'm bad/nationwide, etc, etc. very bluesy... ok, i take back statement that they get worse every time i've seen them... this was top 4, only state fair was worse. maybe it's all uphill from here... seats were good, few rows up on a mid-side section.
below is how tom remembers his zz mobile. reality is: not quite. white, rusty, no nice rims,
